The universe abounds with secrets at the edges of reality. Wonders hidden just under the veneer of what the naked eye can perceive. Tricks of the light, shadows in the darkness, and then, of course, such magics that bind the two. It was this latter kind of mystery that drew such inescapable allure. Dreams fulfilled at great consequence, wishes granted with a terrible price, promises fulfilled but only just.

Those that drew upon that power were magnificent, terrifying beasts. Calm and docile one moment, vile and tempestuous the next. Their duality is all that they have, all that they are. They are both halves of the same coin, that which sows and that which reaps, two natures entangled in eternal conflict.

Yet in this one, there wasn't that roiling incompatibility of the two extremes. There was synchrony, harmony, communion between the two. It was an unnerving equilibrium, something that shouldn't exist and therefore was twice as real. Focused purpose, focused ambition, focused desire, all oriented towards you.

It spoke velvety encouragements, slithered around you in sinuous enticements, dared you not to look as it - he - put every part of himself on display for your enjoyment. Suddenly the threat of unknown repercussions didn't seem as harrowing. Whatever this silver-tongued serpent had to offer would certainly be worth the cost.
